In Kolhapur, Sagar Bagade (57), a multi-talented individual known for his roles as a choreographer, art director, sculptor, and artist, as well as a respected teacher in the community, has been honored with the prestigious National Teachers' Award 2024. This esteemed recognition is set to be presented to him by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in New Delhi on September 5. Bagade proudly shares that he is the sole art educator from Maharashtra to receive this esteemed award since its inception. His inspiring journey from humble beginnings at an orphan school in Pandharpur to achieving two Asia Pacific Book of World Records and now being selected for the National Teachers' Award has established him as a trailblazer in the realm of arts.
Reflecting on his early life experiences, Sagar Bagade recollects, "My childhood was unlike that of others. Discovered on a railway track at Solapur railway station in 1968, a kind-hearted individual admitted me to Navrangi Balak Ashram in Pandharpur, where I spent my formative years. Subsequently, the former Tehsildar of Panhala, Chitranjan Bagade, adopted me, marking the beginning of my journey with them. Unfortunately, they passed away during my 10th standard year, leaving me to navigate life as an orphan once more."
Describing his path in the arts and college life, Bagade shared, "I struggled academically and was struggling in my studies. It was during my time in the 10th grade when a new art teacher, Mali sir, urged me to take my artistic abilities seriously. Following his guidance, I enrolled at Kalavishwa Mahavidyalaya in Sangli for my junior college education. Around the years 1986-1987, movies like 'Love 86' and 'Ilzaam' featuring dances by Govinda influenced me to explore dance, igniting my passion for both dancing and art simultaneously. The positive reception and encouragement from audiences further fueled my pursuit."
"Subsequently, I ventured to Mumbai and Vadodara for employment opportunities. I served as an assistant to Gautam Rajadhyaksha and later as a 'worker' to assistant art director Nitin Desai on two film projects. Returning to Sangli, I initiated dance workshops," he continued.
"Following my marriage, I successfully completed a...After earning a diploma in art, I began my career as an art teacher at New Model English School, under the Swami Vivekanand Shikshan Sanstha in Kolhapur. I started exploring different art forms during my time there. In 2001, I was hired as an art teacher at New Education Society and later at Sou. S.M. Lohia High School, where I had the opportunity to delve into various forms of art. I had the chance to choreograph group dances and work as a dance director for a television series, which gained me recognition in the city. Gradually, I expanded my expertise in arts, dance, sculpture, and theater. Along with my 450 students, I achieved two Asia Pacific World Records, bringing international acclaim to my school and the city of Kolhapur.
When discussing his national award, Bagade mentioned, "I had never considered nominating myself for awards, as I felt they were predetermined. This time, my students took the initiative to submit my nomination. With the support of my students, the school administration, and the education officer, I navigated the interview process and made my case, ultimately becoming the first art teacher from Maharashtra to receive this prestigious award. Upon retirement, my goal is to focus on supporting children living in remote areas and Dhangarwadas."
